This Page is dedicated to a young man who did not live long and seemed to have had a tragic life due to his family's circumstances.Joseph was born at Radford Nottingham on the 8th April 1864 whilst his parents and brothers were on the run fromthe Police. There was a warrant for his fathers arrest for the assault of a Policeman in Sept 1863. (see Robert HawkesCriminal File) and was subsequently arrested in March 1866 and fined for the offence.Looking at his birth certificate if it were not for the fact that his mothers maiden name is correct I would wonder if Ihad the right family. It looks to me as if they had tried to conceal their whereabouts and Robert has given his name asCharles and the date of birth is a day out.The pictures on this page are from what was Joseph's notebook kept by his sister Keziah (Aunty Kitty ) she was withhim when his life was cut short by what we now know was a strangulated hernia.Kitty was a pack rat and when her house was emptied by her family this notebook came to light and I was givencopies of it.It should be noted that one of the addresses in Joseph’s Notebook is that of a Journalist John D Baucite of 54 Lorne Road Northampton who wrote an article about George’s attempted suicide. The article appeared in the Illustrated Police News dated May 1885 and can be viewed in George’s Criminal File
